The home

A house, not a facility

Single-level living in a residential neighbourhood in Lawrenceville, GA, near the Mall of Georgia.

Illustrated for now. Photographs of the real house are coming, and they will tell you far more than this can.

Rooms and rooms together

Where people sleep, and where people gather

8 residents in total. That number is the whole idea, so it will not quietly grow.

6 private suites

One person, one room, one door that closes. Space for a proper bed, an armchair, a chest of drawers and the photographs. Most have a window onto the garden.

1 shared suite

For a couple who would rather not be separated, or for someone who is simply happier with company nearby. It costs less, and for some people it suits better.

Living room and dining table

A room people actually sit in, with a television that goes off as often as on, and one table that everyone eats at together. Meals here are the backbone of the day.

Garden and porch

Level paths, shade, somewhere to sit outside with a visitor. Residents who want to plant something are given something to plant.

Built around how people actually move

The details that prevent falls

Most of what keeps an older person safe is dull, structural and invisible. It is also the part that matters most.

  • No stairs anywhere a resident needs to go
  • Grab bars in every bathroom and beside every bed
  • Doorways and turns that take a walker or a wheelchair
  • Non-slip flooring, no loose rugs, no trailing cables
  • Night lighting on the route to the bathroom
  • Short distances — nothing is far from anything
  • Smoke and carbon-monoxide detection throughout
  • Medication stored locked, and logged every time
